4 Misconceptions About Lash Extensions

Long, thick eyelashes are considered attractive in many countries. And it’s no different in Singapore. Their allure and association to youthfulness have given rise to beauty procedures like eyelash extensions here.

In a bustling metropolis like Singapore, with hectic lifestyles, lash extensions offer a convenient and time-saving solution for busy Singaporeans looking to streamline their daily beauty routines without compromising appearance. However, many misconceptions surrounding eyelash extensions still exist that have rendered many sceptical from giving them a chance.

We’ll debunk these misconceptions to set the right expectations when you decide to get those fluttery lashes for yourself.

Misconception 1: Eyelash Extensions Should Not Be Washed

Just like natural eyelashes, extensions can accumulate dirt, debris, and oils over time. Not cleaning them creates a breeding ground for bacteria, which can cause eye infections or irritation.

Our eyelids also naturally produce sebum that can weaken the adhesive bond between the extensions and natural eyelashes, causing them to fall out prematurely.

If you want to keep fluttering those lashes while maintaining eye health, then you’ll need to regularly clean the extensions to remove excess dirt and oils.

Eyelash Extensions Should Not Be Washed

Here’s what you can do to keep your eyelash extensions clean:

  • Use a gentle, specialised cleaner or a mild, oil-free, and fragrance-free cleanser recommended by your lash technician. Avoid using oil-based makeup removers, as they can break down the adhesive.
  • Then, use a soft, lint-free applicator or a clean mascara wand to apply the cleanser. Gently swipe along the lash line, making sure not to tug or pull on the extensions.
  • Rinse your lashes with water to remove any cleanser residue. Cleansers can weaken the bond too, so make sure to clean them off entirely.
  • Gently pat your lashes dry with a clean, lint-free cloth or tissue. Avoid rubbing or pulling on them.
  • After washing and drying, use a clean mascara wand to gently comb through your lashes and help them regain their shape.

Misconception 2: Breaks are Required Between Eyelash Extension Applications

Our natural eyelashes don’t require breaks in between eyelash extension appointments. But this is only possible when procedures are done correctly and with precision.

Instead of taking breaks, many opt for regular maintenance and refills to keep their lash extensions looking full and fresh. Gaps left behind by falling extensions can be filled with more, ensuring attractive lashes all-year-round. With careful maintenance and aftercare, damage to your lashes is minimised and “rest times” becomes unnecessary before new extensions can be attached.

Misconception 3: Eyelash Extensions can Destroy Your Natural Lashes

While it’s true that improper application and neglect can potentially harm your natural lashes, lash extensions should typically not cause damage to your natural eyelashes when done by a skilled technician and maintained correctly.

A qualified technician should carefully assess your natural lash condition, choose the appropriate length and weight of extensions, and apply them in a way that doesn’t exert excessive stress on your natural lashes.

Misconception 4: Eyelash Extensions are Painful

Apart from tailoring the extensions to your specific needs, eye shape, and natural lash condition, the eyelash extension process is also designed to be comfortable for you.

During application, clients will usually lie down with their eyes closed, relaxing while the technician works. Then, the extensions will be attached to the individual natural lashes with high-quality, medical-grade adhesives made to be gentle on the eyes and skin. This ensures minimal to no contact with the eye or eyelid, and that the risk of allergic reactions and discomfort is reduced.
